Is It Hazardous to Sterilise a Motorhome Tank Using Vinegar?

  • Written by NewsServices.com

It is safe and efficient to use vinegar to clean the water tank in your motorhome. However, there is a catch: in order to completely destroy all bacteria, the vinegar must be heated to at least 60 degrees Celsius. Although unheated vinegar will rather effectively clean and purify your freshwater system, it could not be helpful against the aforementioned microorganisms.

And because of this, you'll need to figure out how to inject hot vinegar into the freshwater system of your motorhome. You're probably wondering how you can inject hot vinegar into your car's freshwater system at this point. So the solution is straightforward. Continue reading to learn how.

To heat the vinegar to 60 degrees Celsius, use the water heater in your motorhome. The finest aspect is that it accomplishes two goals at once. Along with disinfecting and cleaning your freshwater system, hot vinegar can also be used to get rid of calcium or lime deposits that may have built up in your hot water tank and on its anode rod. Although largely safe for human consumption, the acid concentration of vinegar is high enough to clean and dissolve these mineral deposits.

How to Clean Your Motorhome Freshwater System with Vinegar

Below is a step-by-step guide to cleansing your motorhome’s freshwater system safely and efficiently with hot vinegar.

  1. Make sure your water heater is off and set to a temperature of at least 60 degrees Celsius in order to: 1. (140F).

  2. Remove all of the water from your car's hot water tank and freshwater system.

  3. Add at least 60 litres of a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar to your freshwater tank.

  4. Mix white vinegar and water in a 50/50 ratio, then add at least 60 litres of the mixture to your freshwater tank.

  5. Turn on the water pump and open the kitchen faucet to let the vinegar-water solution flow.

  6. Shut off the water and start the water heater. The temperature of the solution may not reach 60 degrees Celsius for 20 to 30 minutes.

  7. Attach a thread adaptor to the kitchen faucet in the interim. Next, connect a garden hose to the adaptor and route it to your motorhome's freshwater tank intake.

  8. After the mixture has heated, turn on the water pump and fill the freshwater tank with hot water by turning on the hot side of the kitchen faucet.

  9. After pouring the boiling vinegar solution into the freshwater tank, turn on one fixture at a time and let it run until you can smell the vinegar. Then turn off that fixture and open the other. Keep in mind that you should open the kitchen faucet's cold side last.

  10. Don't forget to run the solution through your refrigerator's ice maker and water dispenser as well.

  11. Disconnect the outdoor hose after running the hot solution through each hot and cold line in your motorhome. Leave the hot solution in the freshwater system overnight.

  12. Drain and clean the water heater the following day after removing the anode rod. The water heater's sediment may be extremely visible. Reinstall the anode rod and set the water heater's temperature to the default setting (50 degrees).

  13. Until the vinegar smell has vanished, connect to a freshwater supply and run fresh water through the hot and cold sides of your fixtures.

Conclusion

Cleaning the water tank and system in your motorhome without bleach goes against conventional wisdom. But if you want to go green and be environmentally friendly, a hot vinegar solution is fantastic. Keep in mind to clean your car's freshwater system as often as you can, especially if you smell something stale or haven't used your motorhome in a while.
